OQ Chemicals Resumes German Plant Operations

FRIDAY, MAY 10, 2024

After a “substantial” operation disruption earlier this year, global chemical company OQ Chemicals reports it has successfully restarted production at its Oberhausen and Marl, Germany, plants.

According to the company, during the operational pause, it has implemented strategic enhancements to optimize production processes, such as data flows and work processes across asset management, operations technology and engineering.

“We are pleased to report that our units in Germany can ramp up again,” stated Albrecht Schwerin, COO at OQ Chemicals. “The unpredictable shutdown has not been an easy time for us, especially since we have been experiencing high levels of customer demand.

“Nevertheless, OQ Chemicals has remained committed to supporting its customers throughout the disruption. Leveraging our cross-functional international production platform, we worked hard to supply our customers from other sites to minimize the impact on their operations and supply chains.”

In February, the disruption reportedly occurred at a raw material supplier’s synthesis gas unit located at the Oberhausen site. The site produces technical gases, including synthesis gas, which is then supplied to OQ Chemicals as raw material for further processing.

At the time, the affected unit of the raw material supplier was automatically shut down. Additionally, four people underwent precautionary medical examinations and were discharged from the hospital the same day.

OQ Chemicals then declared a “force majeure” for certain products, including Isobutyraldehyde, n-Butyraldehyde, n-Butanol, i-Butanol, 2-Ethylhexanol, n-Butyl acetate, n-Butylamine (all grades), TCD Alcohol DM, Neopentyl Glycol, n-Propionaldehyde, Isovaleraldehyde, 2-Methylbutyric acid, 2-Ethylhexanoic acid, n-Butyric acid, Isobutyric acid, Isononanoic acid, Isopentanoic acid, Isovaleric acid, n-Valeric acid, OXSOFT 3G8 and OXFILM 351.
