Indonesian paint and wood coatings producer PT Mowilex recently obtained its fifth consecutive CarbonNeutral certification from Climate Impact Partners.
According to the company, since becoming Indonesia’s first certified carbon neutral manufacturer in 2019, Mowilex has continued expanding its commitment to supporting Indonesia’s targets of using renewable energy for at least 34% of all power generation by 2030 and the country’s goal of reaching net zero carbon by 2060.
To earn the certification, Mowilex reportedly commissioned SCS Global Services to calculate its Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, according to The CarbonNeutral Protocol.
In addition to cutting emissions through major technology and renewable energy investments, Mowilex adds that it supports offset projects that follow verified standards and advance several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Mowilex inaugurated a new production plant in March last year that was designed to reduce carbon emissions by up to 7%.
Automated power meters and cooling system technologies in the green plant decrease electricity usage by 15%, while skylights and double glass further minimize the electricity used for lighting and air conditioning, the company says.

Additionally, the company operates electric forklifts instead of diesel. The plant’s zero-waste water system also processes and cleans sewage water, which is then reused to irrigate green space that covers 37% of the plant grounds.
New solar panels at the manufacturer’s headquarters are also reportedly anticipated to cut the facility’s carbon emissions by up to 30%.

The company reportedly celebrated this fifth consecutive year of the certification by hosting the Mowilex Carbon Neutral Talk Show 2023. Participants included sustainability experts, environmental activists and academics.
Other recent carbon reduction efforts include the completion of Mowilex’s pledge to pledge to plant 50,000 mangrove trees across Indonesia and a recent voluntary Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report to share its strategies and impact.

Last year, in October, Mowilex teamed up with Habitat for Humanity Indonesia to train, provide job skills and support certification for the next generation of craftsmen.
The three-year program, also in collaboration with the National Carpentry Council and the Vocational Training Center, will reportedly train 210 low-income participants in painting, application and other beginner construction work.
Mowilex explained that the investment will bring much-needed professionals to the industry, as the Ministry of Public Works and Housing finds fewer than one million of Indonesia's 8.3 million building tradespeople are certified.
According to the company’s release, the first nine days of training explore theory and practice. Then, on day 10, participants take a related certification exam.
The certification reportedly equips builders and applicators with the knowledge to construct sturdy commercial and residential structures meeting the standards of building material manufacturers.
