Winners Announced for 2023 Elevation Awards

Technology Publishing Company again partnered with the Commercial Painting Industry Association for the seventh annual commercial honors program, The Elevation Awards. 

The awards recognize projects ranging from residential exteriors and commercial renovations to floor coatings and wallcoverings throughout the commercial coatings industry.

This year’s group of outstanding projects, completed between Jan. 1, 2022, and July 10, 2023, represented an impressive collective of not just commercial painting contractors, but also architects, interior designers, decorative artisans, manufacturers and suppliers throughout the industry.

Projects were reviewed and assessed by our panel of industry expert judges, including:

  • Michael Capulong, Colour Studio;
  • Andre O. Desjarlais, Oak Ridge National Laboratory;
  • Brian Jurgens, W.T. Kenney Company, Inc.;
  • Jeff Theo, Vulcan Painters; and
  • Ken Trimber, KTA-Tator, Inc.

In the coming weeks, PaintSquare Daily News will be highlighting this year’s winners in each category to celebrate commercial painting greatness. All winning projects are also featured in Commercial Painting.

The 2023 Elevation Award Winners are as follows:

In the New Construction category, Sullivan Painting Service, Inc. was presented the award for their work on the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe Community Center in Auburn, Washington.

In the New Construction category, Sullivan Painting Service, Inc. was presented the award for their work on the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe Community Center in Auburn, Washington.
 

In the New Construction category, Sullivan Painting Service, Inc. was presented the award for their work on the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe Community Center in Auburn, Washington. This project, said Alyssa Sullivan of Sullivan Painting, was one of its largest projects to date.

Additionally, the company focused on an “extremely difficult” design-build project with an accelerated schedule.

This award was given for the effective use of coatings and other decorative treatments to achieve interior and/or exterior aesthetic effects on a new construction project—such as those used for retail, hospitality, lodging or entertainment—or a public building, such as a legislative chamber, a school or a railway station.

Mixed-Use Commercial was presented to the Pier One Sydney Harbour Hotel project, completed by Higgins Coatings of Port Melbourne, Australia. With a history dating all the way back to the late 1800s when it served as barracks and later as a busy commercial wharf, the Pier One Sydney Harbour in Sydney, Australia, was repurposed into a hotel in 1998.

Mixed-Use Commercial was presented to the Pier One Sydney Harbour Hotel project, completed by Higgins Coatings of Port Melbourne, Australia. 
 

In recent years, the exterior of the building had begun to deteriorate and needed a repaint to restore life to the facility.

This award was given for the effective use of coatings and other substrate treatments to enhance the interior and/or exterior of a mixed-use commercial building. Examples include buildings where spaces are shared for retail, hospitality, restaurants, entertainment and transportation.

In Multi-Family/Residential High-Rise, Trump Hollywood Condominium took the award, with work done by painting contractor Capital Contractor Services and materials supplied by APV Engineered Coatings. Located on a picturesque oceanfront location in Hollywood Beach, Florida, the 41-floor Trump Hollywood condominium building embodies South Florida luxury.

In Multi-Family/Residential High-Rise, Trump Hollywood Condominium took the award, with work done by painting contractor Capital Contractor Services and materials supplied by APV Engineered Coatings.
 

However, over the years, environmental assaults served to break down the builder applied acrylic coating on the building’s stucco surface, leaving it chalky and dull and exposing the underlying substrate to damage from the elements.

This award was presented for the effective use of coatings and other decorative treatments to achieve interior and/or exterior aesthetic effects on a high-end residential structure. Examples include multifamily and high-rise residential.

Institutional (Healthcare, Education, etc.) was presented to the Principia School Natatorium in Town and Country, Missouri. Bazan Painting of St. Louis was tasked with providing a much-needed face-lift to the indoor pool area of the Principia School, a college preparatory academy.

The natatorium was composed of worn-out glazed block that had discolored and oxidized over time, and Eric Hellwig of Bazan Painting noted that painting glazed block is no easy task.

This award is given for the effective use of coatings and other substrate treatments to enhance the interior and/or exterior of an institutional structure. Examples include hospitals, healthcare facilities, educational facilities, schools and childcare facilities.

Next, in the Floor Coatings category, the Elevation Award went to work on the St. Joseph Catholic Church, conducted by painting contractor Midwest Terrazzo and materials supplier Sherwin-Williams Flooring.

For three months in 2022, an installation crew worked on installing a highly-polished, decorative terrazzo floor that complements the newly renovated church in Jasper, Indiana. The project reportedly brought additional beautiy to the Romanesque Revival-style place of worship.

Next, in the Floor Coatings category, the Elevation Award went to work on the St. Joseph Catholic Church, conducted by painting contractor Midwest Terrazzo and materials supplier Sherwin-Williams Flooring.
 

This award was given for outstanding achievement in selection and installation of a floor coating or treatment that excels in aesthetic effects, durability and maintainability. Applications must make a persuasive case for how a project achieves durability/maintainability.

The Ancillary/Misc. Services (Roof Coatings, Wallcovering, Fabric Panels, etc.) was given to a successful ancillary service project that achieved demonstrable energy savings and desirable aesthetic on, or within, a building. Project examples vary from roof coatings to air barriers and moisture management, to wallcovering and fabric panel installations.

This award went to the newly constructed centerpiece of the Amblebrook Wellness Center, located in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The scope of work called for more than 20 different wallcoverings and paint application systems.

Ralph E. Jones

Wallcoverings contractor Ralph E. Jones of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was selected to perform the wallcovering installation, including wood effect wall covering on ceilings and custom graphic wall coverings, and paint and coatings application.

Finally, drawing from individual category winners, judges selected an overall winner to receive the Judges' Choice Award, which recognizes an outstanding architecture project that best exemplifies the seamless combination of compelling aesthetics and high performance in use of coatings and other substrate treatments.

The Judges' Choice Award went to the restoration of the John Marshall House, a historic house museum and National Historic Landmark in Richmond, Virginia.

Virginia-based painting contractor Widespread Solutions explained that the project was challenging due to its present-day location in bustling downtown Richmond as well as the difficulty of reconstructing and matching historical exterior finish elements of the house.
