Behr Debuts First-Ever Exterior Stain COTY

Earlier this month, Behr Paint Company introduced its first-ever Exterior Wood Stain Color of the Year.

Cordovan Brown is described as a “richly satisfying hue with timeless appeal for a fresh outdoor environment.” The wood stain is reportedly transformative both on its own and when paired with beiges, grays and whites, including Behr’s 2023 Paint Color of the Year, Blank Canvas.

Behr reports that Cordovan Brown is a classic wood stain that is versatile enough to be used by DIYers, designers and professionals for outdoor residential or commercial projects. The hue also complements a wide range of architectural styles from traditional to modern.

“Our goal is to make the color selection process easier, so projects can get done quicker,” said Jodi Allen, Global Chief Marketing Officer at Behr. “Announcing our first-ever exterior stain color of the year diversifies our color trend forecasting and delivers on the color leadership consumers can expect from Behr.”

The stain is available exclusively at The Home Depot in a variety of Behr products, including Behr Premium Solid Color Premium Waterproofing Exterior Stain, Behr Premium Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Exterior Stain, Behr Premium Advanced Deckover, Behr Solid Color House & Fence Wood Stain, and Behr Deckplus.

“We believe wood stains hold just as much power as paint. They offer a polished finish on decks, porches, doors and more which can enhance the overall curb appeal,” said Erika Woelfel, Vice President of Color & Creative Services at Behr.

“Paint and stain can play off each other beautifully, creating a balanced color scheme on exterior surfaces and structures. Pairing darker wood tones like Cordovan Brown with soft natural paint colors creates contrast and compatibility for any style.”

Behr 2023 COTY

Last year, in September, Behr announced its 2023 Color of the Year: Blank Canvas (DC-003).

The transformative white color, Behr notes, is meant to “clear the way for endless design possibilities” and is an opportunity for self-care. According to a study conducted by the paint manufacturer, three-quarters of U.S. homeowners believe that white hues promote relaxation and create a sense of calm.

The data collected in the survey also found that U.S. homeowners:

  • Want their home to be a space where they can completely unwind (92%);
  • Think it’s important that their home feels like an escape from everyday stress (90%);
  • Agree that the color white makes them feel positive (77%)
  • Agree that the color lowers stress levels (71%), creates a sense of calm (74%); and
  • Agree that the color makes them feel focused (75%) and that it is also mood-boosting (63%).

In a press release announcing the COTY, Behr went on to note that Blank Canvas can be leveraged by DIYers, designers and professionals to tackle any project, pairing well with pops of color to personalize any space. The color is also an easy “go-to” to build upon when developing specific serene spaces such as in healthcare or hospitality, as well as in more neurodiversity-friendly residential and commercial spaces, or workplaces.

Blank Canvas is featured in the company’s new BEHR Designer Collection palette of 30 best-selling neutral colors, which was curated by color experts at Behr to inspire all types of creators.
