New Product Announcement: Renewable, Bio-Based Paint
Producer of paints and coatings, and a subsidiary of Asia Coatings Enterprises, Pte. Ltd., PT Mowilex Indonesia (Mowilex) has recently released the country’s first renewable, bio-based paint.
The launch of the new coating is reported to be Mowilex’s latest commitment to both sustainability and premium product quality.
According to reports, Naturalle utilizes an innovative, bio-based technology that replaces petroleum-based resins with natural plants, thus reducing the coating’s overall carbon footprint and pollution. The coating also actively improves air quality by absorbing formaldehyde and turning it into water vapor.
“PRIMAL RN Biobased Acrylic Emulsion and FORMASHIELD Technology from Dow Inc. are incorporated in Mowilex Naturalle paint, offering a sustainable solution and healthier environment to meet asthma and allergy standards,” said Yena Margono, Southeast Asia Marketing Manager for Dow Coating Materials.
The coating formula consists of a water-based acrylic binder made up of 28% renewable raw materials sourced from existing seeds, stalks and grasses. The anti-fungal, anti-bacterial formula also contains no lead, mercury or other heavy metals.
“Our Naturalle paint derives a significant portion of its resins from sustainable, plant-based materials. Using these renewable elements, rather than petroleum-sourced raw materials, lowers the product's carbon footprint. This paint also improves indoor air quality by removing formaldehyde from indoor air, offering a sustainable solution to a common challenge,” added Novina Tjahjadi, Mowilex Head of Research and Development.
Despite the changes in formulation compared to traditional coatings, Mowilex shares that Naturalle is a durable, high-performing matte paint that is low in odor and free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The manufacturer is applying to certify Naturalle through the USDA's BioPreferred Program. The voluntary series of independent, third-party program tests confirm that products meet or exceed minimum bio-based content requirements.
