New Product Announcement: Injectable CUI Inhibitor

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2022

Corrosion-prevention company Cortec Corporation recently released a new vapor phase corrosion inhibitor that can be injected directly into insulating material. CorroLogic CUI Inhibitor Injection is a high-temperature 100% Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI/VpCI) for protection against corrosion under insulation (CUI).

CUI occurs when moisture and other corrosive media enter insulation after water barrier wraps or jackets are compromised or when condensation builds up beneath the insulation. The longer the CUI goes unnoticed, the more serious it becomes, potentially leading to leaks or explosions.

According to the company, it is estimated that 40-60% of piping maintenance costs in the oil and gas industry stem from CUI-related expenses. To tackle this issue, Cortec developed CorroLogic CUI Inhibitor Injection to simplify protection for insulated pipes reaching a high range of temperatures.

“CUI has been an elusive enemy for years. Once piping is installed and insulation is in place, it is difficult to see and correct the problems that may be going on beneath the surface,” wrote Cortec. “Now, thanks to Cortec Corporation, a more viable option exists to mitigate corrosion without removing insulation or seriously disturbing operations.”

The corrosion inhibiting vapor migrates from the injection point along the pipe to form a hydrophobic protective layer on metal surfaces beneath the insulation. The passive layer is reportedly long-lasting and can protect in the presence of chloride-containing moisture, withstanding high temperatures up to 662 degrees Fahrenheit (350 degrees Celsius).

Cortec reports that the product offers an advantage over other methods of CUI protection that can only be applied after removing insulation or before insulating new pipes, with maintenance personnel being able to apply protection under existing layers.

Additionally, this offers a wider timeframe in which to apply preventative measures, increasing the chances of inhibiting and arresting corrosion before it gets too serious. CorroLogic CUI Inhibitor Injection reportedly has the potential to help pipes last longer by minimizing repairs on insulated surfaces, reducing the risk for corrosion-related failures and increasing overall plant safety.
