Nominations Open for 2022 Tank of the Year

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2022

In an emailed press release, protective coatings manufacturer Tnemec Company Inc. announced that it was accepting entries for its 2022 Tank of the Year Competition. The call for nominations was officially announced this week by Scott Keilbey, Sales Director – Water Tank Market.

The deadline to submit is Friday, Sept. 23.

“We look forward to another great year of recognizing the creative uses of Tnemec coatings on water storage tanks,” said Keilbey. “It’s amazing how the contest has grown during the past 16 years; it has become a great way to showcase what’s going on in the water tank industry.”

Nominations can be submitted electronically through the contest website. While all tank styles are eligible, nominated tanks must have been coated or recoated in the last two years with Tnemec coatings. Submissions of high-resolution photography is required.

Following the September deadline, all nominations will be posted on the contest website, where the general public can vote for their favorite tank as the People’s Choice. Voting for this category will open on Oct. 3 at 9 a.m. CST and close on Oct. 14 at 5 p.m. CST.

According to Tnemec, the winner of the People’s Choice will automatically be considered among 11 other company-determined runners up for the Tank of the Year award. A committee of water tank enthusiasts will judge these finalists based on artistic value, the significance of the tank to the surrounding community and any challenges encountered during the project.

“The Tank of the Year competition has gained popularity in the industry since its inception in 2006,” Keilbey added. “We look forward to seeing what this year’s competition looks like, and hope that it continues to be an exciting contest for every engineer, applicator, and municipality involved.”

For last year’s competition, nearly 300 tanks were nominated for the contest. The public reportedly cast over 14,000 online votes.

The People’s Choice winner and finalists will be announced Oct. 17. The overall winner is slated to be announced on Oct. 21.

2021 Winner, Runners Up

Last year, Tnemec announced that a 750,000-gallon composite elevated water tank in Moorhead, Minnesota, was the winner of its 2021 Tank of the Year. The tank, reportedly completed with Tnemec’s fluoropolymer finish HydroFlon, beat out nearly 300 water tanks nominated across the United States and Canada.

The Moorhead tank was selected by a panel of water tank enthusiasts based on criteria such as artistic value, significance of the tank to the community and challenges encountered during the project.

This tank was completed in July 2021 and is owned by Moorehead Public Service. Apex Engineering Group carried out engineering services for the project and KLM Engineering, Inc. conducted its required inspections. Phoenix Fabricators & Erectors served as the project's fabricator and field applicator.

The first runner-up, a water tank in Rochester, Minnesota, was recently repainted to resemble an ear of corn. The city’s landmark tank was also the winner of the People’s Choice competition, reportedly receiving more than 5,000 votes from the public.

The tank project was reported to use Tnemec’s “dry-fall” aluminum coating, Series 43-236 Fast Dry Aluminum, on the tank’s legs, and a high-performance fluoropolymer finish coat, Series 700 HydroFlon, to recoat the corn itself.

Other water tanks among the top 12 finalists for 2021 are in Edmonton, Kentucky; Elmendorf, Texas; Lincoln, Illinois; Lino Lakes, Minnesota; Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; Redmond, Washington; Richardson, Texas; Roswell, New Mexico; and Zephyrhills, Florida.

The Tank of the Year, the People’s Choice and all finalists were featured in Tnemec’s 2022 water tank calendar.
