New Product Announcement: Abrasion Resistant Coating

TUESDAY, JULY 19, 2022

Global coatings company AkzoNobel recently announced that its marine coatings business, International, has launched an enhanced version of its Interzone 945 product to prevent damage protection. Interzone 945GF reportedly provides high abrasion and impact protection for the most severe offshore and chemical environments.

The coating can protect against mechanical damages caused by cargoes in vessel holds, such as coal, cement, scrap iron, clay, grain and paper. According to the emailed press release, the new coating can save up to $1.5 million versus a standard epoxy hold coating over a 15-year total cost of ownership for vessel owners.

Developed with Interzone technology, the coating is reinforced with chemically resistant lamellar glass flake for enhanced durability, abrasion and corrosion protection with excellent cathodic disbondment performance. Because of this, the company notes the interval between cycles of full recoating and refurbishment can be increased versus industry standard coating, allowing a boost in savings over its lifetime.

AkzoNobel reports that due to its quicker drying times, vessels are able to get back in service up to 70% faster than before. A vessel carrying hard cargoes could also be back in service with five days of curing time at 25 degrees.

In terms of application, the paint reportedly provides excellent surface tolerance to hand and power tool prepared steel substrates.

“We are building on the proven performance and strong reputation of our Interzone brand with the introduction of Interzone 954GF,” said Chris Birkert, Marine Segment Manager at AkzoNobel Marine Coatings. “With lower VOC content as well as offering significant improvements in all areas of performance, we are able to save fleet owners time and money, ensuring their vessels are minimizing the time they’re out of service.

“Application is also easier for shipyards, with quicker drying times and increased surface tolerance. This forms part of our complete range of cargo hold coatings, between Intershield and Interbond, all of which provide market leading abrasion resistance, for a variety of environments.”

Interzone 954GF is now available globally. AkzoNobel notes representatives are on hand to support vessel and fleet specific inquiries.
