New Product Announcement: Paint Thickener

THURSDAY, MAY 12, 2022

Global specialty chemicals company Nouryon recently introduced a new cellulose ether, a natural alternative to associative synthetic paint thickeners.

Bermocoll FLOW cellulose ether is reported to be an innovative and sustainable product that combines the flow and leveling properties of an associative synthetic thickener with the stability properties of a cellulose thickener.

“The versatility of Bermocoll FLOW allows our customers to achieve an optimal paint rheology profile while eliminating the need for complex paint thickener systems,” said Rob Vancko, Vice President Paints & Coatings at Nouryon. “Our new technology enhances application and finished paint properties while providing sustainability benefits and a low carbon footprint for our customers.”

The company adds that the new product has an improved spatter resistance and hiding compared to paint thickeners made with standard thickeners. In addition, the product is soluble in water, well suited for low volatile organic compound (VOC) paint formulations and airless spray applications.

Nouryon attributes this to the product’s new type of hydrophobically (water-soluble) modified cellulose ether, which bridges the gap in thickeners, and results in a smoother coating with less sagging.

The thickener can be used for both interior and exterior decorative paints.

“Our global network of paint application labs and partners, as well as our focus on enhancing application properties, positions Nouryon well within the fast-growing Paints and Coatings end-market,” said Larry Ryan, Executive Vice President and President of Performance Formulations and the Americas at Nouryon. “Nouryon is a recognized leader in increasing the sustainability profile of paints and coatings while maintaining and even improving overall performance profiles for our customers.”
