AC Show Kicks Off in Indianapolis

After years of canceled events and virtual show stand-ins, today the American Coatings Show and Conference—hosted by AC Media, in collaboration with the American Coatings Association and Vincentz Network—will kick off its 2022 conference (ACS/ACC) in person.

Taking place from April 5-7 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, the ACS/ACC 2022 brings industry professionals together to expand their knowledge of the latest technology trends for the coatings industry.

Conference Overview

Throughout the event, the ACS/ACC will be hosting multiple pre-conference tutorials, networking opportunities, in-depth conference sessions and poster sessions.

Today, from 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m., the following pre-conference tutorials will be presented:

  • Tutorial 1: Rheology (Ray Fernando, California Polytechnic State university);
  • Tutorial 2: Easy-to-Clean Coatings (W. Marshall Ming, Georgia Southern University);
  • Tutorial 3: Anti-Corrosive Coatings (Brian Skerry, Consultant – Formerly of The Sherwin-Williams Company);
  • Tutorial 4: Waterborne High-Performance Coatings (Timothy December, BASF);
  • Tutorial 5: Polyurethanes (Mike Jeffries, Covestro);

And, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.:

  • Tutorial 6: Functional Films (James Rawlins, University of Southern Mississippi);
  • Tutorial 7: Titanium Dioxide (Michael Diebold, Chemours);
  • Tutorial 8: Biocide Selection Process for Coatings (Beth Ann Browne, IFF);
  • Tutorial 9: Formulating with intelligence: Machine Learning in the Coatings Laboratory (Erik Sapper, California Polytechnic State University); and
  • Tutorial 10: An Overview of Green Building Standards, Life Cycle Assessment, and ACA’s Forthcoming Sustainability Program (Douglas Mazeffe, The Sherwin-Williams Company).

Following the pre-conference tutorials, ACS/ACC is scheduled to kick things off with a Plenary Session. This will include a welcome address, conference introduction and a keynote presentation by Chris Killian Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Eastman. Killian is expected to present on the role of innovation in the coatings industry when every color must be green.

“Like the assets we protect, the brands we enhance, and the beauty we deliver, the coatings industry has remained remarkably strong and resilient through two years of aggressive field testing in a pandemic economic environment,” reads the presentation description. “Indeed, resiliency has long been at the heart of the coatings industry, and often one of the most important functions that our solutions and offerings deliver to the world around us. Today, the resiliency of coatings technology has yet another contribution to make, in leading the way toward a more sustainable future.

“From providing the protection to extend the service life of assets, to adapting formulations toward more sustainable chemistries, to re-engineering application technologies to save resources, our industry is once again demonstrating our resilience to adjust to a world where every color must be green.”

The keynote presentation will be followed by the conference’s award ceremony. The American Coatings Award will be given for the most outstanding technical presentation at the American Coatings Conference. Selected and sponsored by the ACA and Vincentz Network, the award includes a sculpture and a $2,500 cash prize.

In 2020, Zeena Cherian, Senior Staff Scientist for Ashland Specialty Ingredients, was given the award.

The rest of the day’s schedule is as follows:

  • 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Session 1: Science Today, Coatings Tomorrow;
  • 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Session 2: Sustainability;
