Cold Jet Blasting Machines Win Design Award

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30, 2022

Machine industry company Cold Jet, LLC, with design help from Kaleidoscope Innovation, recently announced that two of its dry ice blasters have won The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design 2021 Good Design Award.

From the company’s Aero2 series, PCS 60 and PLT 60 won the award in the industrial category, which is given out to “the most innovative and cutting-edge industrial, product, and graphic designs produced around the world.” The awards are judged on quality, design, function and aesthetics.

According to the release, the series was designed with the operator in mind, providing an ergonomic design for optimal comfort.

“From the onset of the project, our motto was ‘less ice, less air, less noise,’” said Dave Burbrink, the lead designer from Cold Jet for the Aero2 series. Additionally, Cold Jet reports that the dry ice blaster line puts operators in control.

The machines have an HMI display that allow operators to reduce air and dry ice consumption by fine tuning blasting parameters. The Aero2 series also reportedly has a large weight and size difference compared to other machines, with wheels designed for mobility and maneuverability.

“We engineered the Aero2 line to be extremely innovative, high performing and durable,” said Arvid Nielsen, Senior VP of Global Technology, Cold Jet. “Cold Jet’s dry ice blasting technology is patented and proven and our goal with the Aero2 line is to advance our industry to new heights.”

Cold Jet also notes that the line would not have been possible without the help of Kaleidoscope’s Jake Schubert, Nikko Van Stolk and Karl Vanderbeek, in addition to Burbrink.

According to the company’s website, PCS 60 uses its patented Particle Control System (PCS) to cut dry ice into diamond shaped particles in dimensions chose by the operator, from 0.3 millimeters to 3 millimeters. PLT 60 was designed for applications that require more power, with a blast power of up to 250 psi utilizing a “straight through” air system and SureFlow feeding system.

Additionally, both machines are enabled to use the company’s Cold Jet Connect, which provides remote monitoring and diagnostics. The machines have an LCD screen and digital controls, featuring programmable application recipes, which allows users to set and save blasting parameters like blast pressure, particle size and feed rate.

Good Design Awards

Founded in Chicago in 1950, the Good Design exhibition program began as a sponsorship between The Merchandise Mart in Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The program hosted three shows a year, including one at a winter furniture market in January, one at a June summer market and a November show based on the previous two exhibitions.

A different designer was selected each year to curate the installation, with the inaugural installation in the 5,300-square-foot space designed by Charles and Ray. According to its website, Good Design is the oldest and the most prestigious Awards Program organized worldwide.

The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design has continued the program to create a revived awareness about contemporary design and to honor both products and industry leaders in design and manufacturing that have chartered new directions and pushed the envelope for competitive products in the world marketplace.

The museum reports that it has awarded about 40,000 Good Design Awards for design and innovation, sustainability, creativity, branding, ecologically responsible design, human factors, materials, technology, graphic arts, packaging and universal design in over 50 countries.

Submissions are judged by a jury of design professionals and industry specialists and design press on certain criteria established in the original program from 1950. These awards are judged based on innovative design, new technologies, form, materials, construction, concept, function, utility, and energy efficiency and sensitivity to the environment.
