Disney Planning Storyliving Community

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2022

American multinational entertainment and media conglomerate The Walt Disney Company has recently announced its plans to build a series of mixed-use residential communities in the United States.

The first “Storyliving” resort-like, residential development is slated to be built in California's Coachella Valley, where the brand's late founder Walt Disney and wife Lillian owned a home.

“A Storyliving by Disney community is something special,” wrote Disney. “We've begun with a setting in California's Greater Palm Springs and are exploring other location options in the United States – in the places people dream of living in. Communities in these carefully selected locales will take inspiration from the authentic culture and heritage of each region, crafted with an eye on comfort and design.”

About Cotino

Named after continus coggygria, the name for the European smoke tree plant that references Smoke Tree Ranch, where Walt Disney had a house in nearby Palm Springs, the residential complex plans to host 1,900 housing units varying from standalone family homes to estates and condominiums.

While most of the development will be open to homeowners of all ages, it will feature a section reserved specifically for residents over the age of 55.

The magical community will be designed to reflect the history and present-day inspiration of the valley culture. The 618-acre property will also feature a variety of commercial amenities, such as shopping districts, restaurants, cinemas, theaters, a hotel and man-made beach parks.

The community also plans to feature what’s being called a “grand oasis”—a 24-acre central lake. All the facilities are slated to be staffed by Disney cast members.

Disney has described Storyliving as “vibrant new neighborhoods that [will be] infused with the company's special brand of magic.”

While an architect has yet to be assigned for the project, reports indicate that the community will be developed by Arizona-based DMB Development in collaboration with Walt Disney Imagineering, the creative arm of The Walt Disney Company that is responsible for the construction of its theme parks worldwide.

“For nearly 100 years, Disney has shared stories that have touched the hearts and minds of people all around the world,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “As we prepare to enter our second century, we are developing new and exciting ways to bring the magic of Disney to people wherever they are, expanding storytelling to storyliving.

“We can’t wait to welcome residents to these beautiful and unique Disney communities where they can live their lives to the fullest.”

Cotino is the only development to be reported on thus far, however, Disney plans to build a number of other Storyliving developments across the county.
