Contractors Needed for Railroad Bridge Repair

The Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking contractors to perform rehabilitation of the Clinch River Norfolk Southern Bridge located in Scott County, Virginia.

The estimated contract value is $6,678,000.

Bids are due Dec. 15.

Scope of Work

Contractors are urged to bid on rehabilitation of the Norfolk Southern Bridge, which spans roughly 100 feet over the Clinch River. Constructed in 1909 by the Virginia Bridge & Iron Company, the bridge is currently open to rail traffic and serves the Norfolk Southern and Southern Railways. Work on this bridge will include replacement of galvanic anodes, coating and overlay application.

This project will involve zone coating of existing Norfolk Southern steel structures. Steel members will be coated with either VDOT System B approved system: an inorganic zinc-rich coating system (Group I), a moisture-cured urethane or an organic zinc-epoxy-acrylic polyurethane system (Group IA) or an organic zinc-rich coating system (Group II).

The owner-approved Group I manufacturers are Carboline, International Paint, ICI Devoe and Sherwin-Williams. The owner-approved Group IA manufacturers are Ameron (PPG), Sherwin-Williams, Carboline Paint and International Paint. The owner-approved Group II manufacturers are International Paint, Sherwin-Williams and Carboline.

Work will also include 126 square yards of epoxy resin waterproofing application. An additional 3,660 square yards of Type B hydrodemolition and placement of A4 bridge deck concrete overlay are included in this project. The awarded contractor will also oversee replacement of embedded galvanic anodes.

The existing coatings contain lead (Type B hazardous material). Environmental protection (containment) and waste disposal are required.
