Sherwin Fire Protection Applied at Milan Landmark

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2021

In an emailed press release, global coatings firm The Sherwin-Williams Company announced that its fire protection intumescent coating system had been applied to a new landmark in Milan, Italy’s financial district.

Currently under construction, the UnipolSai Tower is slated to be the new headquarters for Italian insurance and banking group Unipol. Encompassing 31,000 square meters (about 333,681 square feet), once completed later this year, the tower will stand 26 stories high and is LEED Platinum certified to meet the highest environmental standards.

Once opened, Unipol expects to have up to 2,000 people working at the facility and knew that the steel structure would need to be properly protected in case of the event of a fire. For the project, experts from Sherwin-Williams selected its FIRETEX C69 Epoxy blast primer and FIRETEX FX6002 methacrylate intumescent coating. The structure also received a topcoat of Acrolon 7300 polyurethane.

The specific coating was selected for its ability to offer up to 120 minutes of fire protection and long-term corrosion protection.

“Where the lives of people and safety of property are at stake, only the highest level of fire protection measures can ensure the building’s long-term viability,” said Valter Volta, Sherwin-Williams Regional Sales Manager for Southeast Europe.

“FIRETEX FX6002 offers fabricators across Europe high-quality passive fire protection coatings, which also help in reducing bottlenecks and project costs.”

According to the press release, FIRETEX FX6002 was the winner of the 2021 Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category. The company reports that the fire protective coatings can be applied offsite, directly to metal without the need for a primer or topcoat in some environments, enabling paint applicators to transport steelwork in a matter of hours rather than days—saving them time and fewer bottlenecks, as specified by the steel fabricator for the construction, MAEG Costruzioni Metalliche.

Sherwin adds that the coating’s super-fast drying times and offsite application further allows for greater expression of architectural design.

“This high-rise office block demands the highest level of fire protection in order to safeguard the structure and the thousands of employees inside,” said Alessio Ortolan, General Manager of Maeg Costruzioni.

“Sherwin-Williams offered the solution we needed to coat the necessary 5,000 tons of steel including H profiles and rectangular beams which connect the external diagrid to the reinforced concrete core. Using FX6002 allowed us to apply offsite, leading to a quick throughput and less damage to the coated beams when lifted into place.”

Other recent projects using fire protection coatings delivered by Sherwin-Williams in EMEAI include London’s The Shard and the Leadenhall Building (known as The Cheesegrater), as well as Azerbaijan’s Flame Towers.

Last month, Sherwin-Williams announced its 2022 Color of the Year: Evergreen Fog SW 9130.

“Evergreen Fog is a sophisticated wash of color for spaces that crave a subtle yet stunning statement shade,” said Sue Wadden, Director of Color Marketing at Sherwin-Williams at the time. “Evergreen Fog inspires us to begin again and is a great choice for modern interiors and exteriors.”

The color was selected following efforts made by Wadden and other members of the Sherwin-Williams global color and design team to research and identify key trends that influence the way we interact with color.

According to the team, Evergreen Fog is both unique and versatile, and is capable of suiting a variety of spaces, substrates and design styles, including art deco, modern organic and postmodernism.

More recently, Sherwin-Williams attended the Commercial Painting Industry Association’s inaugural CPIA Leadership Conference, which was hosted in conjunction with Technology Publishing Company’s hosted-buyer event, Commercial Contractor Connect, from Oct. 19-22.

Focusing solely on the commercial painting industry, both events shared recreational, educational and networking activities at the beautiful Hammock Beach Golf Resort & Spa in Palm Coast, Florida.
