New Fluoropolymer Topcoat Standard

Dr. Kurt Wood, Senior Principal Scientist at Arkema, Inc., presented “New Fluoropolymer Topcoat Standard for Protective and Restoration Coatings,” on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020, as part of the conference’s protective and marine coatings track.

Since the 1980s, fluoropolymer resin technologies have offered the possibility of a quantum improvement in topcoat decorative properties—gloss and color retention—compared to conventional acrylic and polyester resins. Specifiers of both protective and architectural restoration coatings systems have expressed a need for an SSPC standard for field-applied fluoropolymer topcoats, particularly for bright and saturated colors.

This presentation discusses how, over the past few years, the SSPC C.1.8 committee has been working to develop such a standard, which at the time, was in the final stages of balloting. A key challenge in the process has been identifying a set of accelerated weathering test conditions which would allow for the reliable qualification of fluoropolymer topcoat formulations, much faster than the 10-50 year outdoor service life of the fluoropolymer paint.

Using a round-robin weathering study of 13 resin systems (fluorinated and non-fluorinated) from 10 different manufacturers, in four reference colors, we’ll talk about the identified accelerated test conditions that accurately differentiate between high weatherability fluoropolymer formulations, and conventional SSPC Paint 36 and MPI 311 formulations (Spearman rank correlation > 0.90).

About the Presenter

Wood is a Senior Principal Scientist at Arkema, Inc., near Philadelphia. He has worked in the polymers and coatings area since 1989—first with the Rohm and Haas Company—and with Arkema (formerly Atofina Chemicals) since 1996, where he is a group leader for KYNAR PVDF coatings research and development.

Wood is particularly interested in waterborne coatings, crosslinking technologies, and weatherability prediction for coatings. He received a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley.
