Webinar Archive: Polysiloxane Technology

TUESDAY, APRIL 27, 2021

Although Technology Publishing Co. has wrapped up PaintSquare Connect, its signature virtual event for the protective and commercial coatings industries, an archived library of its featured webinars remains available to registrants until May 31.

Over the course of the next month, PaintSquare Daily News will continue to highlight some of those webinars, reminding readers to experience these educational presentations before they’re gone.

The event was co-sponsored by Sherwin-Williams, Carboline, Finishing First (Powered by LMCI) and McBrayer & Associates.

Understanding Polysiloxane Technology

Tom Higginbotham and Herman Rodriquez, of PPG Industries, alongside Tom Bekemeier from Dow, presented “How to Understand Polysiloxane Technology,” on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020, as part of the conference’s protective and marine coatings track.

In their webinar, the trio discussed the breakthrough experienced in the coatings industry 25 years ago when chemists created a way to combine and react common organic epoxy resins with inorganic siloxane to create a coating that offers the distinct advantages of both resin types.

Siloxane resins tend to be resistant to higher temperatures and to maintain color and gloss attributes in external weathering. Generally, epoxies offer a myriad of valuable characteristics as a coating including excellent wetting, corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, hardness, abrasion resistance and moisture resistance. The technology allowing the combination of these two resin types resulted in a unique coating system that offers excellent weathering characteristic to an epoxy resin system.

The presenters also discuss the value of the epoxy siloxane as well other resin combinations surrounding this technology and how these are utilized in corrosion prevention.
