PPG Announces 2021 Color Palette

Coatings company PPG has announced its 2021 Palette of the Year—entitled “Be Well,” the collection of three hues aims to invoke simple, nostalgic comforts.

“With the world sheltering in place for the better half of the year, we have begun to crave human connection and embrace simple activities, including walking, hiking, baking and gardening,” said Dee Schlotter, PPG Senior Color Marketing Manager, Architectural and Industrial Coatings.

“This organic and hopeful palette represents what we have been longing for after decades of overstimulation and overconsumption—simplicity and restfulness.”

The palette consists of:

  • Transcend – a mid-tone, oatmeal shade that draws on earthy influences;
  • Big Cypress – a shade with ginger and persimmon undertones; and
  • Misty Aqua – a watercolor-esque cerulean blue.

To complement these tones, PPG recommends greenery, with blonde or natural brown wood tones paired with layers of textures included linen, velvet and woven textiles.

“When the world experiences events that cause unrest, anxiety and grief, we tend to naturally gravitate toward compassionate colors that allow us to create a personal retreat from the world,” said Schlotter.

“These comfort colors are similar to comfort foods—both offering a certain sense of familiarity and normalcy when facing the unknown.”

In addition to the Be Well palette, PPG also introduced two color stories for 2021:

  • Be True: Anchoring Reality – This palette collects vintage-inspired colors and is a mixture of earthy tones and jewel box hues such as Enchanting Eggplant, Shadow Taupe and Ruby Lips.
  • Be Wild: Activating Optimism – This group aims for a mood-boosting combination of bolder hues including French Lilac, Blackberry Jam and Blue Odyssey.
