ACA Show Goes Virtual, Awards Best Paper

Last week, the American Coatings Show and Conference —hosted by AC Media, in collaboration with the American Coatings Association and Vincentz Network—opened the virtual show to the public.

This year’s conference had been slated to take place March 31 to April 2 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The presentations, however, were still made available and what’s more: coatings science colleagues still selected the best paper for the 2020 conference.

ACC Award Winner

Zeena Cherian, of Ashland Specialty Ingredients won the award for best paper this year for her work entitled, ““New Techniques to Understand Stain Resistance Properties of Interior Water-Based Architectural Paints.”

An excerpt from her abstract includes: “This study details new approaches to understand the stain resistant property of coatings. Molecular modeling has been used to simulate stain interaction with key components of the paint formulations. Atomic Force Microscopy has been used to study the coating surface chemistry.

“Additionally, an in-situ stain adsorption and de-sorption technique using a Quartz-Crystal Microbalance sensor will also be highlighted. The objective of the study is to understand the overall mechanism of stain interaction that will help in formulating and fine-tuning improved stain-resistant coatings.”

Cherian’s paper was selected from 96 others in the 2020 virtual conference. She is the first professional from Ashland Specialty to receive the honor.
