Concrete Pour Starts at Vegas Convention Center


Construction at the Las Vegas Convention Center’s $980 million expansion has started pouring 600,000 square feet of concrete flooring for the main exhibit hall.

Construction on the expansion is now reportedly 77% complete and officials say that the pouring process will take four to five months.

The floor will need 75 million pounds of concrete, which will require approximately 1,800 trips by fully loaded concrete trucks. The exhibit hall floor is a 10-inch reinforced concrete slab.

As of this update, crews have logged 2,173,337 hours of work since construction began.

The Project

Renderings for the overhaul were first revealed last April by TVS Design (Atlanta), which took lead on the project, working with TSK Architects, Simpson Coulter Studio, Carpenter Sellers Sel Gatto Architects and KME Architects.

Early designs showed a broad entry featuring an atrium and food court, as well as a rooftop terrace. The design element that got the most attention was referred to as a “roofline ribbon,” which the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported will serve as a wayfinding system and identify main entrances to the various halls.

In September, the LVCVA approved a $758.1 million construction-manager-at-risk contract with the Harris-Turner JV for the new hall, which is expected to be completed by Dec. 1, 2020. That contract includes $691 million in construction costs, a $48 million GMP contingency and an $18 million construction management fee.

In addition to the hall, the LVCVA and project manager Terry Miller, of Cordell Corp., agreed to three additional projects at the time that include building landscaping, wall buffers and a canopy over the building’s loading docks, which total $10 million. Reports also note that the LVCVA has agreed to contribute $10 million for hazardous-material remediation at the site.

Two months later, Cordell Corp. was granted a $13.5 million contract as a builder representative.

In May, Harris-Turner was awarded a $45.2 million contract for the two-year renovation of the four existing exhibition halls. That project is expected to begin in January 2021, just after the new hall is completed.

The JV reportedly listed a fixed fee of $3.5 million for pre-construction services on renovations, according to the Review-Journal. Other finalists for the bid included AECOM Hunt and The Penta Building Group.

Klai Juba Wald and Design Las Vegas have been designated as architects of record for that project.

In addition to the convention center expansion and renovation, the project will also be home to a tunnel to transport visitors, giving Elon Musk’s The Boring Company its first commercial contract, a $48.6 million endeavor approved by the LVCVA at the end of May.

The LVCVA selected The Boring Company as one of the firms to enter into exclusive contract negotiations to design, construct and operate a Loop system for the Las Vegas Convention Center. The loop is to provide a fast and convenient transportation option for convention and trade show attendees on the LVCC campus.

The Campus Wide People Mover, the project’s initial design, is focused around the convention center. The Authority estimated that visitors would have to travel 2 miles from one end of the convention center to the other, a distance that warranted the transportation solution.

Officials announced last month that work on the tunnel had officially begun and it—along with the expansion—is slated to open in January 2021.

At the end of October, officials announced that construction reached the halfway mark, and in February, Elon Musk’s The Boring Company reported that the first of two tunnels for the convention center’s future underground express transportation system had been completed.
