TX Suspension Bridge Project Awarded

The City of Waco, Texas, has awarded a contract in the amount of $12,409,135.50 for the rehabilitation and coating of the Waco Suspension Bridge to Gibson & Associates of Balch Springs, Texas.

The bridge was orginally constructed in 1870 with a main span of 475 feet. It is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is a Registered Texas Landmark. Gibson & Associates was the lowest of three apparent bidders.

Additional bidders included:

  • Jay-Reese Contractors, Inc. of Austin, Texas, in the amount of $13,012,360; and
  • Johnson Brothers Corporation of Fort Worth, Texas, in the amount of $14,000,000.

The contract bid Dec. 19, 2019.

Scope of Work

The awarded contractor will oversee rehabilitation of the Waco Suspension Bridge located in Waco, Texas.

Proposed work includes mid-river supports and bracing to allow replacement of steel suspension cables, upgrading structural foundations and anchorages, full replacement of the concrete deck system, railing improvements, masonry and structural repairs of the towers and anchor houses, as well as new flashings and coatings.

The project includes preparation and painting of existing structural steel members. The steel will require surface preparation to Hand-Tool (SSPC-SP 2), Power-Tool (SSPC-SP 3), or Light Water-Jetting (SSPC-SP WJ 4) standards. The steel will then be coated with the TxDOT System I-A one-coat overcoating or an acrylic cured aliphatic urethane system. The owner-approved manufacturers include Carboline, CSL Silicones and Sherwin-Williams. Existing coatings are considered hazardous. Containment is required.

Work will include 10,000 square feet of exterior coating of towers. The project will also include 12,000 square feet of exterior coating of anchor houses. Existing roofing will require coating with a water-based acrylic top coat. The owner-approved manufacturer is GAF, or an approved equivalent.

Certification to SSPC-QP 1 is required.
