Huntsman Opens New Dubai Polyurethanes Plant

Last week, global chemical company Huntsman Corporation (The Woodlands, Texas) announced the opening of its new polyurethanes systems house located in the Jebel Ali Free Trade Zone in Dubai.

The opening arrives a little over a year after the company announced plans for the facility.

Huntsman Expansion

According to Huntsman, the purpose-built facility will both increase the production of polyurethane systems and polyester polyols for customers across the region, in addition to strengthening the company’s downstream capabilities in the Middle East and North African regions.

"With a fast-growing population that is 90% urbanized, the UAE is a big importer of polyurethane for use in construction and building projects and the production of consumer goods,” said Steen Weien Hansen, Vice President for Europe, Africa, Middle East and India.

The company’s new system house reportedly includes a production area furnished with various manufacturing equipment, blenders, reactors, filling stations, offices, quality control laboratories and a control room.

Production services at the facility will include the manufacture of polyurethane foams for construction, insulation, appliances, bedding and furniture applications. The facility will also produce prepolymers for coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers applications.

Additionally, the system house is reported to be equipped with a dedicated spray foam application and training center and will provide customers in the region with local technical and training assistance—fully supported by the global Demilec organization.

Huntsman notes that the support received from Demilec comes as the new site will dually serve as a regional base for Demilec’s spray polyurethane foam business. Demilec is a global manufacturer of SPF insulation used in commercial and residential properties to improve energy efficiency.

Huntsman's other downstream businesses in the Middle East include Huntsman EMA - a systems house in Turkey; and Huntsman Arab Polyols Company, in Saudi Arabia—a joint venture with the BCI Group of Companies, in which Huntsman is the majority shareholder.

“Constructing the new systems house at JAFZA brings us closer to our customers and gives us everything we need to expand our business in the Middle East and North Africa, including manufacturing competitiveness, infrastructure links and speed of response,” stated Tony Hankins, President of Huntsman's Polyurethanes division.
