Elevation Awards Spotlight: Quebec Tech HQ

MONDAY, AUGUST 19, 2019

With the extended deadline just announced for the third annual Elevation Awards, we will be counting down to the deadline (Oct. 18) with featured selections of this year’s nominees, giving readers a glimpse of the competition. Below is a selected nominee in the “Exteriors: Commercial + Public Buildings” category.

Project: Eddyfi Technologies World Headquarters

Architecture firm Coarchitecture, along with coatings applicator Anacolor, recently worked together to come up with a coatings solution for Eddyfi Technologies’ world headquarters building in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

Aiming for a LEED certification, the design featured materials such as locally sourced wood and triple-glazed windows, as well as a perforated metal wall that surrounds most of the building’s second floor to further shield the interior from sun exposure.

While the architect wanted all the colors for the exterior coatings to be formulated in powder to work toward the LEED status, it also sought the durability and performance associated with liquid coatings.

That’s when Anacolor suggested the use of PPG’s Coraflon powder coatings.

Most of the metal facade is covered in PPG Coraflon White Pearl powder coating, offset by a lesser amount of PPG Coraflon Gauntlet Gray powder coating. (A small section of the cladding—less than 1,000 square feet—is finished with a beige-colored, metallic PPG Duranar XL liquid coating.) All of which were specially formulated for this project.

The most challenging part of the project, according to Anacolor, was formulating the colors that the architects specified in the PPG Coraflon powder coatings. A particular challenge was the White Pearl that had to be bonded in a special way to preserve the pearlescent effect, which shines on the building in the evening.

Other biophilic and sustainability features include floor-to-ceiling windows that connect occupants to the surrounding environment, as well as natural ventilation, a central atrium and indoor and outdoor meeting spaces.
