The winners of eVolo Magazine’s 2019 Skyscraper Competition have been announced.

The jury—formed by Melike Altinisik, founder and design principal of Melike Altinisik Archtects; Vincent Callebaut, founder and design principal of Vincent Callebaut Architectures; Marc Fornes, founder and designer of THEVERYMANY; and Mitchell Joachim, cofounder and design principal of Terreform ONE—received 478 applications, selecting 27 honorable mentions and three winners.
About the Competition
Established by eVolo in 2006, the annual Skyscraper Competition invites architects, students, engineers, designers and artists from all over the world to compete.
According to this year’s registration page, the competition “recognizes outstanding ideas that redefine skyscraper design through the implementation of novel technologies, materials, programs, aesthetics and spatial organizations along with studies on globalization, flexibility, adaptability and the digital revolution.”

Ultimately, the competition is an investigation on how both public and private spaces can use advanced technology and sustainable systems to solve economic, environmental, cultural issues and more.
For the 2019 competition, participants were required to register no later than Jan. 29 and submit project submissions by Feb. 12. The competition was purely digital and required no hardcopies, but two boards with the project’s information (plans, sections, perspectives, etc.), a file containing the project’s statement and a file containing the entrants’ personal information needed to be included with submissions.
The Winners
Developed by Serbian designer Marko Dragicevic, the first-place skyscraper, “Methanescraper,” is a vertical landfill that also produces methane for energy. The infrastructure is a proposal for a city district in Belgrade, Serbia, built out of waste capsules and piping so that methane gas can be pumped into storage tanks for filtering and generation for electric energy. Dragicevic was awarded $5,000 and additional press distribution by v2com.

Taking second place was “Airscraper,” a mixed-use building designed by Polish designers Klaudia Golaszewska and Marek Grodzicki. Unlike traditional mixed-use skyscrapers, this design was envisioned for Beijing as a massive chimney using three modules—air-intake, solar-gain and green-garden—to suck in outdoor polluted air for treatment. Golaszewska and Grodzicki were awarded $2,000 for their submission.

In addition to cash prizes, all winners and special mentions were also published on eVolo and several international publications.
