About the Competition

Established by eVolo in 2006, the annual Skyscraper Competition invites architects, students, engineers, designers and artists from all over the world to compete.

According to this year’s registration page, the competition “recognizes outstanding ideas that redefine skyscraper design through the implementation of novel technologies, materials, programs, aesthetics and spatial organizations along with studies on globalization, flexibility, adaptability and the digital revolution.”

Taking second place was “Airscraper,” a mixed-use building designed by Polish designers Klaudia Golaszewska and Marek Grodzicki.

Ultimately, the competition is an investigation on how both public and private spaces can use advanced technology and sustainable systems to solve economic, environmental, cultural issues and more.

The competition was purely digital and required no hardcopies, but two boards with the project’s information (plans, sections, perspectives, etc.), a file containing the project’s statement and a file containing the entrants’ personal information needed to be included with submissions.

Dragicevic was awarded $5,000 and additional press distribution by v2com.

“Creature Ark: Biosphere Skyscraper,” a vertical nature conservation equipped with a central research station—designed by U.K.-based designers Zijian Wan, Xiaozhi Qi and Yueya Liu—took third place in the competition.

Unlike traditional mixed-use skyscrapers, this design was envisioned for Beijing as a massive chimney using three modules—air-intake, solar-gain and green-garden—to suck in outdoor polluted air for treatment. Golaszewska and Grodzicki were awarded $2,000 for their submission.
