PA Architects Design 'Largest' Esports Arena

Comcast Spectator and The Cordish Cos. have announced the design plans for a $50 million Philadelphia-based esports arena.

The 60,000-square-foot venue was designed by stadium architects Populous (Pittsburgh) and is slated to be the largest esports venue in the Western Hemisphere.

The Plan

Dubbed the Fusion Arena, this future complex is planned to be apart of the Philadelphia Sports Complex, Wells Fargo Center, Lincoln Financial Field and Citizens Bank Park—Comcast and Cordish also plan to incorporate an $80 million Class A office tower.

The home of the Philadelphia Fusion esports franchise plans to encompass a 6,000-square-foot entry, 10,000-square-foot training center, 2,000-square-foot interactive media space, a broadcast studio, offices and more.

“Fusion Arena represents a watershed moment for the competitive gaming market,” said Populous Senior Principal Brian Mirakian

“We’re taking our 36 years of designing iconic experiences for traditional sports—settings like Yankee Stadium—and applying those same principles of design to the virtual world of gaming.”

The 3,500-seat arena also plans to feature other unique seating experiences such as balcony bars, club seats featuring USB ports, exclusive suites and flexible loge boxes. The decision to use industrial materials throughout the structure has also been planned, paying tribute to Philadelphia’s heritage as the “workshop of the world.”

With construction scheduled to begin this summer, the futuristic-themed arena plans to host many competitive gaming and live entertainment events.

More Esports Arenas

Philadelphia isn’t the only major city planning for esports’ popularity, in Las Vegas, The Madison Square Garden Co. (New York City) is working on its Sphere project. Slated to be built on the Las Vegas Strip, the 18,000-seat arena will also feature 36 miles of programmable exterior LED lighting. In addition, two more esports arenas are in the works for locations in California.

However, already ahead of the game, two other esports arenas have already been completed at the Luxor Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and the Arlington Convention Center in Arlington, Texas.
