DoD Honors Puget Sound Naval Shipyard

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2018

Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, one of four Navy-owned shipyards in the United States, will be honored with this year’s Robert T. Mason Award for Depot Maintenance Excellence, given annually by the Department of Defense.

PSNS, in Bremerton, Washington, completed three scheduled aircraft carrier maintenance availabilities on time or ahead of schedule last year, according to the Navy, contributing to the facility’s qualification for the award. The facility was also the site of work on submarines including the USS Louisiana, USS Maine and USS Ohio.

The Navy notes that the inactive submarine recycling program at PSNS helped the Navy avoid costs of nearly $5 million last year on the recycling of two former subs, the Baltimore and the Phoenix.

"Every part of the command's service to the fleet and every person who works here and those who support us played a role in this significant achievement," said Howard Markle, PSNS & IMF commanding officer. "Our entire team earned this through hard work, commitment, innovation and pride in every corner of our command. I am continually awestruck by their accomplishments and humbled by their day in and day out attainment of maintenance excellence in all they do."

The announcement of the honor comes less than a year after the Navy’s shipyards were criticized by the Government Accountability Office for the costly backlog of work created by their poor physical condition. The GAO’s report, in November 2017, said that PSNS, the largest of the four Navy shipyards, delivered projects on time only 29 percent of the time over the 16 years prior. It noted that the facility would need upgrades in order to handle today’s larger submarines.

The Robert T. Mason Award is named for a former assistant deputy undersecretary of defense for maintenance policy, programs and resources who the DoD says was instrumental in transforming depot-level operations.
