Bid Requests to Start on $10B WI Plant Project
In preparation for its upcoming $10 billion manufacturing plant, Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group has named the lead contractors on the project.
The Project
The 20 million square feet of building space will house a flat screen manufacturing complex in Racine County, Wisconsin, (about 25 miles southeast of Milwaukee) and will eventually employ 13,000 people.
The group confirmed earlier this month that Providence, Rhode Island-based Gilbane Building Co. (which has a Milwaukee office) and global firm M+W Group (Stuttgart, Germany) will be the lead contractors on the project.
The contractors will begin issuing requests for bids in the coming weeks, according to the announcement, and will start the hiring process within the next 60 days.
According to the Milwaukee Business Journal, Colorado-based CH2M Cos. Ltd. (also with a Milwaukee location) will lead engineering and architecture services while The Sigma Group, a local firm, will do environmental consulting and planning for the site.
“Each company has a track record of excellence and a commitment to quality that will help us take advantage of the talented and hard-working workforce in Wisconsin,” said Louis Woo, special assistant to the founder and CEO of Foxconn.
Construction is estimated to take four years and will require an estimated 10,234 construction workers annually until the job is complete.
Impact
The Business Journal reports that the massive project is spurring new job-training activity by local industry officials.
The Building Industry Group Skilled Trades Employment Program recently opened a new training center at Gateway Technical Collage’s Racine Campus to help train potential local workers.
Gilbane reportedly worked with the group during its last big Wisconsin project, a downtown tower for Northwestern Mutual.
Foxconn has to meet job creation benchmarks in order to receive $3 billion in tax breaks—a deal that has been a source of controversy for the project—and according to an analysis, the plant will add about $51 billion to the state’s gross domestic product over the 15 years that the state will pay Foxconn incentives.
