Lufthansa Unveils New Airline Livery


Germany-based Lufthansa Group recently unveiled new livery for its airline, which was part of a redesign to mark the 100th anniversary of the airline’s iconic crane. The reveal also featured two planes that had been updated to reflect the design change.

The unveiling events, hosted at the Frankfurt and Munich hubs on Feb. 7, featured 3,000 guests total, and hosted a Boeing 747-8 and an Airbus A321 that featured the new design.

Design Update

Transitioning away from its yellow-toned theme, Lufthansa’s new livery features a navy-blue crane on a white background, in many cases rendered in reverse (with the crane itself in white over navy blue).

"The crane has always been with us and clearly stands for the promising performance from Lufthansa,” said Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. “To this day, it still stands as a symbol of highest quality, excellent service, flying expertise, reliability, innovative spirit; and it stands for trust."

The Lufthansa Group reportedly invests 2 billion euros ($1.2 billion) a year in new, fuel-efficient aircraft.

100th Anniversary and Livery Redesign

The original crane, which was designed by Otto Firle, became the airline’s icon, but, according to Lufthansa, the new design is “fit for the digital world.”

The Group said in a press release that a “thinner ring makes the crane look more elegant, bringing it into the foreground and granting it more space. All in all, the trademark will gain lightness and elegance.”

For the first time in 30 years, the airline’s aircraft are being given new livery. The creation process resulted in 800 designs, and the final choice retains the company’s blue as the key.

Around 160 million items will be exchanged over the next two years, to reflect the design change.
