Frida Escobedo Tapped for 2018 Serpentine Pavilion


This year’s prestigious Serpentine Pavilion will be designed by Mexico City-based architect Frida Escobedo. The announcement, made late last week, noted that Escobedo is the youngest designer ever to be tapped for the project and is also the first solo woman since London's annual commission began in 2000 with Zaha Hadid.


The Serpentine Gallery describes Escobedo’s style as a draw from domestic Mexican architecture with British materials and history. This mix is evident in the proposed courtyard-style design that will harness “a subtle interplay of light, water and geometry.”

The enclosed courtyard (common in Mexican residential architecture) will have two rectangular volumes positioned at an angle—the outer walls will be aligned with the gallery’s eastern facade and the internal axis will align due north.

British-made materials will be used in the construction, particularly in the celosia (a type of breeze wall, also common in Mexico), which will be made out of a lattice of cement roof tiles.

Playing with reflection, the underside of the canopy will be clad with mirrored panels while the floor is set to house a shallow pool. Each will play off each other through the course of the day’s sunlight.

“The design for the Serpentine Pavilion 2018 is a meeting of material and historical inspirations inseparable from the city of London itself and an idea which has been central to our practice from the beginning: the expression of time in architecture through inventive use of everyday materials and simple forms,” Escobedo said.

“For the Serpentine Pavilion, we have added the materials of light and shadow, reflection and refraction, turning the building into a timepiece that charts the passage of the day.”

The pavilion will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time from June 15 to Oct. 7 in London’s Hyde Park, in front of the Serpentine Gallery.
