SSPC Issues AB 3 Revision

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2017

SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings recently announced that it has issued a revision of one of its standards related to abrasive media.

The updates to SSPC-AB 3, Ferrous Metallic Abrasive, involves largely editorial changes, including revisions that incorporate changes to a related standard, SAE J444, Cast Shot and Grit Size Specifications for Peening and Cleaning. AB 3 also now includes a reference to ASTM D7393, Standard Practice for Indicating Oil in Abrasives.

SSPC-AB 3 exists to establish requirements for the quality of ferrous-metal abrasives such as iron and steel shot and grit. The standard describes standard shot and grit sizes and shapes, as well as cleanliness, hardness and other properties.

AB 3 is meant to be used as a standard for new abrasive media, not recycled media. It can be used to verify newly purchased media before use. It is one of four abrasive standards offered by SSPC.

The revision was carried out by committee C.2.16, SSPC-AB 3 Revision, chaired by William L. Hansel of CL Coatings.

The newly revised AB 3 can be purchased via the SSPC Marketplace or the SSPC app.
