Call for Entries: Copper in Architecture Awards

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2017


For those architects, designers and contractors who work with copper, the Copper Development Association and the Canadian Copper & Brass Development Association are seeking submissions for the 2018 North American Copper in Architecture Awards.

Project Submissions

Eligible projects must be located in North America, have been completed in the last three years and feature significant usage of architectural copper alloys.

Projects are judged with four categories in mind:

  • Copper system design;
  • Integration of copper alloys with the overall building design;
  • Craftsmanship of installation; and
  • Excellence in innovation or restoration.

To submit an entry, include details such as the official project name, location, the architect of record and location, and other relevant information.

Those who win the award will receive a custom copper plaque that features an etching of their project at the awards ceremony, which will be held in New York City in 2018.

Purchased from the Whitney Museum of American Art, six historic brownstones and two townhouses, located in New York City, were one of the 2017 award winners. The properties were repurposed into boutique, mixed-use spaces, with the brownstones becoming 10 three- to five-bedroom residences.

The choice of copper for this particular project was a throwback to the original material on the buildings.

The sheet metal contractor on the job was Long Island-based B&B Sheet Metal Inc., with Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners LLP serving as the architect and Apple Restoration & Waterproofing Inc. as the subcontractor.
