CONSTRUCT to Showcase Exhibitors, Tours

THURSDAY, AUGUST 10, 2017

The Construction Specifications Institute will hold its annual CONSTRUCT conference Sept. 13-15 at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence.

The three days of the event will showcase more than 200 exhibitors, 60 educational sessions, two technical tours, an awards ceremony and a keynote by Pritzker prize-winner Thom Mayne.

Featured Sessions

The keynote presentation, “Multiple Agendas with Thom Mayne,” will reflect on Mayne’s career, including his path to his current post as founding principal at architectural firm firm Morphosis. Other points will include:

  • An introduction to Morphosis’ fabrication and technical design practices;
  • An exploration of project cost management opportunities through planning, design and construction controls;
  • A discussion of opportunities for product development within architectural practice; and
  • And finally, a review of methods of sustainable building practices to maximize returns in spatial, cultural and environmental terms.

Other session highlighted by CSI include:

Specifications in the Age of Smart Cities - How Specs Are Changing the World with Paul Doherty;

  • "What is a Building Enclosure?" and "Roofing: Where the Building Touches the Sky" with Joseph Lstiburek;
  • "The Complete Wall: Hands-On Demo of Detailing for a Continuous Air, Water and Thermal Assembly" with Tiffany Coppock;
  • "Let's Fix Construction: An Interactive Luncheon" with Cherise Lakeside, Ankrom-Moisan Architects and Eric Lussier;
  • "Specifying Target Value Delivery" with Beth Stroshane; and
  • "Understanding & Ending Moisture-Related Flooring Problems" with Peter Craig and Scott Tarr.

Tours

On Wednesday morning, attendees will have the opportunity to tour the John J. Sbrega Health & Science Building, a LEED Platinum facility that is the largest zero net energy classroom and science lab in the Northeast.

CSI notes that after taking this tour, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the methods used to achieve ZNE for an energy-dense program in a cold climate;
  • Identify methods to offset a building’s energy consumption;
  • Describe strategies to ensure efficient ongoing operation of a ZNE building; and
  • Discuss methods to achieve ZNE design without increasing the budget.

Later that day, there will be an opportunity to see the architectural history of downtown Providence in the “Modern Technology, Traditional Sites - Incorporating New Innovations in Historic Buildings” tour.

Learning objectives for this tour include:

  • Discuss the history and architecture of Providence, Rhode Island;
  • Specify methods that can be used to successfully incorporate modern technology into historic buildings;
  • Describe how the recent successful renovation work was completed on a historic building; and
  • Recognize how to successfully design an addition within a historic compound using modern materials and methods.

Awards

Durability + Design will be hosting an awards ceremony for its inaugural Elevation Awards at a breakfast reception at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, at the Lippitt House Museum.

Category winners and the Judges' Choice Award recipient will be formally revealed in the historic Renaissance Revival villa with Italian palazzo elements.

Embellished with elaborate faux finishes, colorful stained glass windows, ornate woodwork details and surviving original furnishings, the house is also significant for its pioneering heating and plumbing systems.

CSI will also hold its annual awards ceremony that evening, which will feature CSI awards including the Outstanding Chapter Commendations, Distinguished Membership and investiture of new CSI Fellows.

Other Programs

In addition to the hundreds of exhibitors, CONSTRUCT will also offer a specific track for young professionals (those who are 35 and younger) on Wednesday. Led by Cherise Lakeside, the young professionals agenda includes sessions on networking, mentoring and more.
