Solar Energy Storage Product Unveiled

TUESDAY, AUGUST 8, 2017

Swedish furniture giant IKEA has unveiled a battery-storage solution to accompany its solar panel line, a move that it estimates will save customers 70 percent on their electric bills.

Working with the United Kingdom’s largest solar company, Solarcentury, the battery packs are marketed as the first to be sold by a major retailer and rival Tesla’s Powerwall batteries, which are charged via solar and wind energy.

“Battery storage is set to completely revolutionize the home energy market, with solar home owners now able to maximize the amount of solar-generated electricity that they can store and use in their own homes,” said Susannah Wood, head of residential solar at Solarcentury.

The storage is designed to work with existing solar panels or in a brand new system, IKEA says, adding that the storage is an important step because as much as 60 percent of residential solar panel energy is wasted.

The cost of just the battery storage starts at £3,000.

“At IKEA we’re always looking for ways to help customers take positive actions at home for both the environment and their wallets,” said Hege Saebjornsen, country sustainability manager, IKEA U.K. and Ireland. “We know that our customers want to live more sustainably, and together with Solarcentury, we will help them to get more value from their solar panels and do just that.”

Although the product is currently only available for the U.K.’s online customers, it’s slated to be available in all IKEA stores by the end of the year.
