A new enhanced electroless nickel plating from Carbodeon has been developed to improve performance in sliding applications, including oil and gas facilities.

Carbodeon, a coating material specialist from Finland, partnered with CCT Plating of Germany to develop NanoDiamond.

A new enhanced electroless nickel plating from Carbodeon has been developed to improve performance in sliding applications.

According to the company, electroless nickel plating has certain advantages over other coating types, such as corrosion and abrasion resistance and the creation of an even coating. But the electroless nickel plating process has its limitations, especially with regard to tribological applications, usually involving moving metal parts. In these instances, adhesive wear and galling tend to lead to rapid wear, if not failure.

Diamond Nanoparticles

Incorporating Carbodeon NanoDiamond into electroless nickel plating can address these issues, the company says. According to Carbodeon, spherical diamond nanoparticles are treated to make them disperse in coating liquids, as well as to carry a positive electrical charge on their surfaces. The diamond particles behave similarly to positively charged ions in the plating process, and they co-deposit onto the component with the coating material.

The latest generation of metal-diamond composite surface treatments is geared toward bettering combating adhesive wear, which most often occurs when plated parts are sliding in contact with other metal parts.

Carbodeon’s NanoDiamond’s performance characteristics include:

Modern Safety Techniques
NLB Corporation
  • A reduction in adhesive wear, which does not make the coating abrasive or increase surface friction;
  • The ability to use the coating as plated, which does not affect the substrate’s heat treatment condition (the coating can also be subjected to annealing);
  • Wear rate reduction by 30 percent as plated, and 85 percent in an annealed state;
  • Increased durability for standard annealed coatings;
  • Coating hardness significantly increased when annealed, reaching a maximum Vickers hardness values of 1030 Hv; and
  • A lack of hexavalent chromium in the process, which means the product is not subject to health and environmental regulations applying to chomium-6.

NanoDiamond applications include anything that experiences sliding wear, including printing and textile manufacturing, as well as the oil and gas industry
