Elevation Awards Spotlight: Ford Field

TUESDAY, MAY 30, 2017

Durability + Design is continuing to provide a glimpse into the competition of our inaugural Elevation Awards, an event developed to honor architects, interior designers, painting contractors, decorative artisans, manufacturers and suppliers for their excellent work. Below is a selected nominee from the “Roof Coatings” category.

Project: Ford Field

Tremco Roofing & Building Maintenance took on the task of restoring the 340,000-square-foot domed roof of Detroit’s Ford Field, home of the National Football League’s Detroit Lions. The project took place while the stadium underwent an energy-efficient upgrade (under contractor Schreiber Corporation), making sustainability goal No. 1 for the 10- to 15-person crew.

The 14-year-old, PVC Single Ply roofing system first had to be evaluated. Problem areas were discovered using IR Diagnostics, which found that about 5 percent of the roof contained damaged insulation, making it a candidate for restoration.

The low-odor AlphaGuard BIO base coat was installed in conjunction with a prefab polyester reinforcement, followed by the white AlphaGuard BIO top coat. The AlphaGuard system—proposed by senior field adviser James Getzen—is energy-efficient as it absorbs little heat and can reduce energy use while providing insulation.

The stadium’s roof also displays the Ford logo, which was restored using color-matched Solargard Acrythane Ford Blue in two locations. Finally, non-skid walkways were also added along parapet walls and edges for improved safety.

The installation took about 60 days keeping the job well within the budget and timeline, while adding more than 20 years of service life to the mammoth rooftop.
