Elevation Awards Spotlight: Texas Marriot

TUESDAY, MAY 16, 2017

With only weeks left to submit an entry for Durability + Design’s inaugural Elevation Awards, we will be counting down to the deadline (May 26) by featuring a select nomination each day, giving you a glimpse of the competition. Below is a selected nominee in the “Commercial Interiors” category.

Project: Marriot Marquis Hotel

Southwest Progressive Enterprises Inc. was brought on by interior design firm Looney & Associates to design a custom wall finish for the Marriot Marquis Hotel in Houston, Texas.

The firm wanted a design that had influences of Houston’s diverse landscape, roadways and bayous to adorn 15,000 square feet of wall surface at the premiere hotel.

SPE turned to Armourcoat USA’s Travertine and Spatulata products to create the customization, in which SPE created more than 20 different sample designs based on the firm’s criteria. There were some early bumps in the road, however, due to budget constraints.

The first choice of the vine-like design was for the smooth vines (Spatulata) to be embedded into the rough texture (Travertine) to give the appearance that the vines had been “carved” out of the Travertine finish. That would have required the entirety of the surface first to finish with the smooth Spatulata, then the pattern would be masked off, then the entire wall would be plastered again with the Travertine finish. That turned out to be over the project’s budget, so the Travertine was applied first with the vines overtop.

The firm wanted a design that had influences of Houston’s diverse landscape, roadways and bayous to play over 15,000 square feet of wall surface at the premiere hotel.

The finish was hand-applied, so a single four-person team carried the entire project for consistency. The design itself was also done by hand, instead of with the help of stencils and resulted in a smooth, seamless pattern.
