Powder Protects Metals in Recessed Areas

Cortec Corporation, a corrosion-control materials manufacturer headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, recently introduced MCI-309, a vapor-phase corrosion inhibitor powder used for protection of ferrous metals and aluminum in recessed areas, interior cavities and voids.

The company says the powder provides an efficient dry method of protecting metals within an enclosed space, pointing out the MCI vaporizes and adsorbs on the metal surfaces and reaches all exposed areas.

Cortec says that MCI-309, which is a mixed inhibitor, offers protection to both the cathodic and anodic sites of metal without affecting the physical properties of concrete or grout, such as set time or strengths. The firm adds it will not cause hydrogen embrittlement for high-tensile strength steel.

Where to Use It

Applications for MCI-309 include:

  • Segmental concrete bridge tendons;
  • Post-tensioned box-girder bridges;
  • Tubular structures, pipes, and vessels;
  • Equipment protection after hydrostatic testing;
  • Parts, components, and completed assemblies during shipping and storage; and
  • Pre-stressed tendons.

No Corrosion

Cortec notes that its MCI technology prevents corroding rebar in deteriorating concrete from needing costly repairs, helping to avoid financial losses and serious injuries.

The company says its MCI products for concrete help maintain structural integrity, rehabilitate structures, and alleviate environmental concerns. MCI-309 creates a monomolecular inhibiting layer, which enables up to 24 months of protection.

Contec points out that surfaces protected with MCI-309—the powder has no silicates, phosphates, nitrites, or heavy metalsdo not have to be cleaned before concrete or grout placement; if the MCI layer is disturbed by moisture or by opening an enclosed space, it replenishes because of continuous vapor redeposition.

The company notes MCI-309 can be removed with an air gun or water.
