Commercial Workshop Kicks Off SSPC 2017

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2017

Contractors, facility owners, specifiers, suppliers and other coatings professionals convened Monday (Jan. 30) in Tampa to kick off the SSPC 2017 Featuring GREENCOAT conference.

The four-day conference is billed as the only event dedicated exclusively to protective, marine, industrial and commercial coatings.

The commercial coatings lineup at SSPC 2017 featured presentations, workshops and committee meetings, including a novel workshop sponsored by Durability + Design magazine.

In all, more than 100 technical presentations, lectures, discussion panels and demonstrations are scheduled to take place during the conference. Further, the exhibit floor will offer attendees the opportunity to network with 140 exhibitors, including suppliers of architectural coatings, application equipment, inspection equipment and additional coatings materials.

Technology Publishing Company, Durability + Design’s publisher, will be onsite, in booth #433.

New Workshop Focus

“Coatings and Water Repellents: Advantages and Disadvantages of Specific Brands of Water Repellents,” sponsored by Durability + Design magazine, was a novel workshop that took place in three sessions Tuesday (Jan. 31).

Kenneth Trimber, chairman of the SSPC’s Commercial Coatings Committee, moderated the workshop, which “tackled the big issues related to moisture intrusion and how to deal with them,” according to Amy Woodall, Durability + Design magazine editor.

The workshop aimed to help attendees make better informed decisions with the selection of water repellents and coatings for use on exterior of concrete and masonry buildings.

The focus was on the selection of water repellents and coatings for use on the exteriors of concrete and masonry buildings and sought to offer attendees a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of specific brands of materials that are candidates for use on the exterior of their buildings.

Panel Discussion

During the first two sessions, Woodall says Trimber gave an overview of the variety of potential moisture issues before giving manufacturer representatives the opportunity to explain how specific products from their catalog would address them. Manufacturers represented in the morning sessions were Prosoco, Benjamin Moore, The Sherwin-Williams Company and Sto Corp.

Each supplier presented attributes of specific brands. Specifically:

  • Al Morris with Prosoco differentiated between waterproofing and water repellents, reviewed types of masonry and discussed available Prosoco products.
     
  • Jon Minerowicz and Jeff Spillane with Benjamin Moore reviewed substrates and products. They also emphasized that surface preparation is the key to success.
     
  • Sherwin-Williams’ Rick Watson and Larry Mroz began with a discussion of things they want to look at before putting paint on a building. They detailed the company’s masonry products and attributes.
     
  • Sto Corp.’s Chuck Duffin and Ed Telson discussed the purpose of coatings in commercial buildings and why they fail. They reviewed the company’s systems approach and technology.

The beginning sessions set the stage for the afternoon discussions, which were based on specific building scenarios involving the use of water repellents and coatings. Manufacturers then proposed which products they would use to address those scenarios, as well as other important considerations that would precede their decisions in the field. Attendees were encouraged to vote on the systems they would most likely choose, and to ask questions throughout.

Additional Sessions, Committee to Meet

The conference lineup also included additional technical sessions that may be of interest to commercial coatings professionals. For example:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 1, 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.: “Regulatory Update, New and Revised Regulations and Actions Effecting the Coatings Industry,” presented by Alison Kaelin, ABKaelin LLC.; and
     
  • Thursday, Feb. 2, 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.: “Estimated Color Fade of PVDF-Based Topcoats for 'Bright Color' Architectural Restoration and Protective Coating Applications,” presented by Kurt Wood, Arkema.

The SSPC Commercial Coatings Committee is also scheduled to meet Wednesday (Feb. 1) to discuss standards and guides in development for work on commercial, institutional and architectural buildings.

SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings was founded in 1950 as the Steel Structures Painting Council. Today, the Pittsburgh-based association focuses on the protection and preservation of architectural, industrial and marine structures through the use of high-performance protective, marine and industrial coatings.
