Axalta to Buy Los Angeles Paint Maker
Philadelphia-based Axalta Coating Systems has announced plans to acquire Los Angeles-based Ellis Paint Company.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Ellis, founded in Montana in 1887, has been based in California since the 1930s. In addition to the Pacific Coat Lacquer line of auto refinish paints, the company offers industrial paints and coatings under the Hy-Lux, Shaft-Lac, Maximus and Engard lines, as well as direct-to-metal and industrial aerosol products.
Ellis’s industrial offerings range from solventborne enamels for wood and metal substrates to corrosion-resistant primers for tanks, pipelines, ships and other applications, and urethanes for concrete floors, machinery, structural steel and similar uses.
Ellis also manufactures pool and deck coating line Nelsonite.
Ellis President and CEO Sandra Berg, who is also CEO of Pacific Resource Recovery Services, was the first woman elected chair of the American Coatings Association, serving from 2014 to 2016.
“Our company has proven itself in California through three generations,” Berg said. “It is tremendously exciting to know that Axalta will not only help us better serve our current customers, but also make our assortment of environmentally responsible products available to a wider range of national and international customers.”
Axalta Industrial Lines
Axalta’s industrial coatings offerings include the Nap-Gard and Abcite lines, largely geared toward the oil and gas industry, and the Dura-Coat line of coil coatings, which Axalta acquired in 2016.
“We are excited to have the extensive range of high quality Ellis Paint Company brands join Axalta’s portfolio of products,” said Michael Cash, Axalta senior vice president and president, industrial coatings. “Ellis Paint’s commitment to providing innovative and sustainable coatings is renowned in the industry and will align well with our focus on technology and business strategy."
Axalta did not indicate how quickly the company expects the deal to close, and the company did not immediately reply to a request for that information Monday afternoon (Jan. 9).
Axalta Coating Systems serves 100,000 customers in 130 countries worldwide. The company reported net sales of $4.1 billion in 2015.
