Selecting Coatings by Brand: A Novel SSPC Workshop

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2016

A novel workshop at SSPC 2017, scheduled for Jan. 31 in Tampa, FL, will describe the capabilities and uses of proprietary products for exterior concrete and masonry substrates.

The workshop, “Coatings and Water Repellents: Advantages and Disadvantages of Specific Brands,” isn’t a typical, generic conference presentation. It is designed to help owners, architects, consultants and contractors select specific coatings by brand name, not by a generalized, and sometimes vague, generic description of products.

Five coating suppliers—Dow Corning Corporation, The Sherwin-Williams Company, Sto Corp., Prosoco and Benjamin Moore—will participate in the all-day workshop. First, in two morning sessions, they will each describe their coating and water repellent brands. Then, in an afternoon panel discussion, they will explain the appropriateness of selecting their brands in eight scenarios of use.

For instance, one scenario involves a building in Chicago with CMU walls that have been painted twice since the original paint was applied. The walls are damp and have extensive blistering and peeling, but the contract calls for overcoating. The supplier panelists will explain strengths and limitations of their products in achieving this overcoating successfully.

Kenneth Trimber, chairman of the SSPC’s Commercial Coatings Committee, will moderate the new workshop, which is sponsored by Durability + Design magazine.
