Weather Tracker Detects Lightning Hazards

A new “all-in-one weather device” was developed by a weather technology startup with the goal of keeping construction and mining crews safer when working outdoors.

INO Technologies (Louisville, CO) has released the INO Weather Pro, a portable device that the company says tracks weather and can alert the user to nearby lightning and other hazards, in addition to giving information including local temperature, dew point and relative humidity.

The Weather Pro takes readings onsite, with sensors reading temperature, barometric pressure and humidity, as well as a lightning detection capability that can sense lightning within 40 miles, according to INO.

Lightning Alerts

The product can alert users to dangerous conditions like nearby lightning or excessive heat in an accurate, localized way when weather alerts from the media might not, the company says. The conditions are updated in real time. The lightning sensor sets off an alarm if lightning is detected nearby, according to the company.

“We’ve perfected the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ approach to personal weather intelligence by combining lightning, temperature, atmospheric pressure and humidity sensors in a single, handheld device,” said INO Technologies founder Michael Lands. “The INO Weather Pro adds the missing link of lightning detection to these classic weather indicators, plus heat index, altitude and dew point for a total of seven full-service capabilities.”

Weather Pro, which INO says is water-resistant, runs on a USB-charged lithium-ion battery, and has a suggested retail price of $497.
