SSPC Announces New Releases
Two new publications—a new standard on pre-construction primer coatings and a newly revised and reissued standard on aluminum-pigmented epoxy coatings—are now available from SSPC, The Society for Protective Coatings (Pittsburgh).
SSPC-Guide 22
SSPC-Guide 22, "Use and Retention of Pre-Construction Primers on Steel in Shipbuilding," provides specifiers and users with information regarding the use of pre-construction primers (PCPs) on structural steel in shipbuilding, SSPC says.
Written by its Committee on Pre-Construction Primers, the guide contains information on the types, application and material properties of shop-applied PCP coatings used in the shipbuilding industry to temporarily protect steel during the shipbuilding process.
According to the association, while these primers sometimes must be removed prior to applying the primary coating system, in many instances complete removal is not necessary if a secondary surface preparation of the PCP is performed prior to application of the final coating system.
This new guide provides background on the reasons to use and retain PCPs, types of PCPs and their application and inspection. Further, the guide offers information on the secondary surface preparation processes that are used when PCPs are retained in the final, compatible primary coating system.
While this document contains details specific to the shipbuilding industry, SSPC notes, the technical concepts related to the application and retention of PCP may apply to other industrial applications.
SSPC-PS 26.00
SSPC-PS 26.00, "Aluminum-Pigmented Epoxy Coating System Materials Standard, Performance-Based," was developed as a resource for owners, specifiers and coating manufacturers who need to qualify aluminum-pigmented epoxy coatings by performance testing, the association says.
PS 26.00 contains benchmarks and evaluation criteria for physical properties, such as mechanical stability, flexibility and package stability of the liquid coating. Moreover, it includes performance requirements for corrosion resistance properties that are evaluated using accelerated weathering tests, SSPC says.
The standard also allows for two types of coatings: Type I coatings intended for use over hand-cleaned steel, and Type II coatings intended for use over blast-cleaned steel, the association explains.
The standard includes criteria for preparation of test panels used for corrosion resistance testing of each type of coating, it adds.
