Report: Deck Coating at Issue
A deck coating billed to “bring new life to old wood and concrete surfaces” is the subject of a number of consumer complaints in Canada, according to a watchdog report.
CBC News reported Tuesday (May 24) that consumers have alleged issues with Behr Premium Deckover, a 100 percent acrylic formula designed to beautify aging surfaces.
The company says proper surface preparation and application techniques are key to the coating’s performance.
Homeowner Allegations
One homeowner in Nova Scotia, Paul Rhyno, told the news agency that three months after he installed the product it “started peeling off in big swaths and bubbling.” He reportedly used the product in accordance with packaging directions.
“I used the Behr-brand cleaner and pressure washed the deck,” he told CBC News, noting that the application was done when the deck was dry and it wasn’t too hot.
Another homeowner in Ontario also claimed Deckover didn’t properly adhere to her deck.
“There were places where it had lifted up and you could pick up a corner of it and it would just peel off in big strips but then there were other places where it was so firmly adhered you couldn’t get it off,” Barbara Saxberg told the news outlet. Saxberg also maintained she had followed the directions for proper application.
Painter Opinion
CBC News also reportedly spoke to a professional painter with 45 years of experience, who believed that the “thick” product might not be the best choice for decks in the Canadian climate.
The company said that it could be used it all climates, however.
Company Responds
In response to the watchdog report, Behr Paint told D+D News, “Like all such products, the performance of [the Deckover] coating is dependent on the steps taken to prepare the surface and the current state of the surface being painted.”

“When the surface is properly prepared and the product is applied following all usage instructions, this advanced formula creates a smooth (or textured) finish that rejuvenates outdoor spaces,” said Behr.

Behr invites consumers who encounter issues with its products to call 1-800-661-1591 (Canada) or 1-800-854-0133 Ext. 2 (U.S.).
As for Saxberg, she said Behr compensated her for the cost of the product and an amount to cover the labor.
