Alkyd chemistry was the focus of the technical lecture deemed most outstanding among the presentations making up this year’s American Coatings Conference.
Erin Vogel, Ph.D., research scientist for industrial coatings at Dow Coating Materials, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company, accepted the American Coatings Award from the American Coatings Association and partner Vincentz Network during the conference’s plenary session, Monday (April 11), the company announced.

The American Coatings Conference and Trade Show 2016 opened Tuesday (April 12) in Indianapolis and closes Thursday (April 14). Paint and coatings editorial products offered by Technology Publishing Company, publisher of PaintSquare News, will be displayed in Booth 568.
“It is such an honor to gain industry recognition for our work in advancing the performance and sustainability of paints and coatings,” said Vogel.
Vogel’s technical paper details the development of new alkyd chemistry offerings to help solve the industry challenge of developing environmentally friendly alkyd-based paints and coatings that resist corrosion, adhere well and remain glossy.
She delivered the award-winning paper, “Ultra-Low VOC Waterborne Alkyd Dispersions with Solvent-borne Alkyd Performance,” during a morning session Wednesday (April 13). An abstract of the paper is available here.
Advancing Performance, Sustainability
“Our goal is to close the performance gap between reliable solvent-borne alkyd coatings that can emit hazardous chemicals and environmentally friendly waterborne versions,” Vogel noted.
“Only 10 percent of the overall alkyd coatings market is currently waterborne,” she explained, “so we’re confident that the availability of these new offerings will help encourage a market shift toward using alkyd coatings with improved environmental profiles.”
According to Dow, market trends have favored solvent-borne alkyds, particularly in industrial coatings, because of their fast hardness development, high gloss, excellent adhesion and overall corrosion protection. Despite these performance properties solvent-borne alkyd coatings contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that enter the air as coatings dry.
In contrast, waterborne alkyd coatings have low- and near-zero VOC capabilities, but developing waterborne alkyd chemistries that perform well has remained challenging because alkyds do not mix with water, the company said.

To overcome this challenge, Dow’s proprietary process mechanically disperses alkyds into water to develop stable waterborne alkyd dispersions, it said. These dispersions can be formulated into ultra-low VOC alkyd coatings that can match or exceed the performance of solvent-borne formulations and display excellent gloss, adhesion and corrosion resistance properties, it claims.
