Dow Corning’s New Silicone Technologies
Midland, MI-based Dow Corning has announced it will showcase four new products for the paint and coatings industry at the upcoming American Coatings Show 2016, set for April 12-14 in Indianapolis.
The Dow Corning 108F Additive, 8590 Additive, 2405 Resin and 3055 Resin are billed as advanced silicone technologies that support environmental protection in a number of ways, including minimizing volatile organic compounds, saving energy and avoiding the use of tin catalysts, according to the manufacturer.
2 Foam-Control Additives
The 108F Additive was formulated to deliver a “precise balance” of foam control and compatibility in low-to-medium pigment volume concentration water-based coatings and inks, the Midland, MI-based company says.
Specifically designed for premium gloss applications, such as wood coatings, industrial coatings and inks, the additive minimizes emission of VOCs and is formulated without alkylphenol ethoxylate (APEO), Dow Corning relates.
Tim Roggow, Dow Corning’s technical industry specialist, is scheduled to present on 108F Additive as a part of the ACS New Product Showcase at 11:00 a.m. April 12.
The company’s other new additive, 8590 Additive, was designed for use in a wide range of waterborne paints, inks and coatings. Also a foam control material, the manufacturer recommends the product for use in acrylic styrene emulsion paints, acrylic urethane paints, flexographic inks and other applications.
The additive is said to perform well at low dosages, will not impact gloss, features low-VOC emissions and is APEO-free.
Dow Corning describes its 2405 Resin as a solventless methyl methoxy resin that cures within 60 minutes at ambient temperature when catalyzed by titanium compounds, significantly reducing energy requirements.
Formulators can overcome brittleness, poor impact resistance and film-building constraints associated with traditional high-temperature-resistant resins with the new offering, the company reports.
Further, the resin forms a medium-hard coating with high heat resistance (up to 650 degrees Celsius with black and aluminum pigments) and features "excellent" solvent resistance, the company says. The product cures without the use of tin catalysts, adds Dow Corning.
Finally, the company’s 3055 Resin delivers amine functionality that stands apart from traditional organic amine polymers in its ability to react with urethane, epoxy, polyester and other organic resins, according to the manufacturer.
The new resin does not require catalysts and/or ambient moisture for crosslinking and curing, and with < 1 percent residual solvent, the product allows for the formulation of low VOC products, Dow Corning says.
Improved physical properties—such as increased flexibility, thermal stability and acid resistance, and lower water absorption—and long-term coatings performance, are reportedly achieved with use of the resin.
