NYC Facade Falls Amid Storm

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2016

A portion of a Verizon building in New York City crashed down during a powerful storm that pummeled the area overnight Wednesday (Feb. 24), according to various news outlets.

The heavy rains and forceful wind gusts—approaching 60 mph—were believed to have caused a brick and concrete portion—measuring 20 feet by 60 feet—to rip off of the building, located in Queens.

No one was injured in the partial collapse, reports relate.

Assessing Damage

Images from the scene showed debris blocking the street below. Police said three parked cars were also damaged.

Crews reportedly arrived at the scene clear the roadway around 7 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 25) morning. Officials also assessed the building to make sure it was safe for occupancy.

New York’s NBC affiliate reported that bricks began raining down at 1 a.m. Thursday, and at some point thereafter, the massive chunk crashed down.

Residents told media outlets they heard “a loud crash” in the middle of the night and were worried about the possibility of more bricks coming down.
