Growth Projection: Adhesives and Sealants

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2016

Demand for adhesives and sealants is projected to expand 4.5 percent annually, reaching $64 billion in 2019.

The growth will driven by increased urbanization and infrastructure improvements in developing countries combined with rebounding construction spending in Western Europe and the U.S.

That’s the big-picture conclusion of a new market study, “World Adhesives & Sealants,” from The Freedonia Group Inc., of Cleveland.

Rebounding construction in the U.S. will help drive global demand for adhesives and sealants, Freedonia reports.

The global demand is forecast to reach 20.2 million metric tons. Also figuring into the materials’ growth forecast is the increased adoption of bonding technologies designed to replace or augment mechanical fasteners.

China to Dominate

China will continue to lead the world as the top adhesive and sealant consumer through 2019, the study reported.

“Construction spending will remain robust in China, fueling demand for silicone and epoxy sealants, flooring and wall covering adhesives, and other products,” said analyst Carolyn Zulandt.

India is expected to post the most rapid advances of any major market, fueled by increase in construction spending and motor vehicle output, the study said.

Reactive Products

Freedonia reports that the fastest annual sales gains are projected for reactive adhesives and sealants, driven by rising demand in high-performance applications including bonding of motor vehicles, aerospace and electronic components.

Moreover, ongoing strength in global construction activity will further boost sales of epoxy, polyurethane, silicone and other sealant types used in building construction and civil engineering.

Water-based materials will continue to capture the largest market share, bolstered by their good performance, ease of application and environmental friendliness compared to solvent-based products, the market research group reported.
