Axalta Celebrates 150-Year History

MONDAY, JANUARY 18, 2016

Global coatings supplier Axalta Coating Systems is celebrating 150 years in the industry this year.

“All of us at Axalta are excited to reach this important milestone in the history of our company,” Chairman and CEO Charlie Shaver said. “Over the next 12 months we will celebrate our past and build on our extensive knowledge and experience for the next 150 years.”

The company’s heritage dates back to 1866, the year its first products were developed in Germany.

Today, headquartered in Philadelphia, the company boasts nearly 13,000 employees and 120,000 customers in 130 countries, it says.

History of Innovation

The manufacturer charts its growth from the nineteenth century when it developed products that supplied European carriage manufacturers with colorful coatings. In the twentieth century, it evolved to meet the needs of a growing automotive industry—including introducing the first quick-drying multicolor lacquer line for automobile production in the U.S. in the 1920s, the company says.

Other milestones include development of the L,a,b color equations that became a key analytic tool in the catalogue of color science, it says, as well as the first environmentally responsible liquid coating systems with the introduction of waterborne coatings.

According to the company, as the needs across many industries—from automotive to oil and gas, electrical, and heavy-duty vehicles—evolved, so did its portfolio of color tool and coating products.

“We will continue to use advanced technologies to develop next generation coatings while providing outstanding quality and service in the years ahead,” Shaver said.

Additionally, the company is expanding its global reach by expanding its production capacity in Germany, Brazil, China, Mexico and India, it says. In addition to a new Global Innovation Center in Philadelphia, the company said it is building an Asia-Pacific technology center in China.

The expansion and color technology developments “are focused on meeting the needs of our customers well into the future,” Shaver said.
