Standard Announced Ahead of SSPC 2016
Performance requirements for elastomeric, water-based, high-build coatings used to protect exterior masonry and concrete commercial structures are the focus of a new technical standard by SSPC: The Society of Protective Coatings.
News of the new commercial standard comes a month before SSPC hosts its annual conference and exhibition Jan. 18-21, 2016, in San Antonio.
SSPC 2016 featuring GreenCOAT is billed as the only event dedicated exclusively to protective, marine, industrial and commercial coatings. The commercial coatings specific program details appear below; a full program is available on the show’s website.
New Commercial Standard
The new standard, SSPC-Paint 46, Elastomeric, Water Based, High Build, Flat, Performance-Based Coating for Masonry and Concrete, is designed to establish laboratory performance requirements for these coatings.
Coating manufacturers and specifiers may use the standard as a set of performance benchmarks, SSPC said.
The standard was developed by Committee C.8.2 Commercial Coating Materials, which is chaired by Steven Reinstadtler of Covestro LLC.
"The new standard represents the input and engagement from dozens of industry professionals from multiple points in the value chain, such as coatings formulators, contractors, specifiers, testing firms, and consultants," Reinstadtler told D+D News.
Coatings Covered
Coatings that meet the requirements of the new standard may be applied on above-ground exterior masonry or concrete substrates, such as concrete masonry unit block walls; precast or poured-in-place concrete masonry; concrete tilt-up construction; stucco; and fiber cement siding.
The performance levels are based on results of laboratory testing for material weathering and chemical resistance properties, as well as laboratory evaluation for physical properties such as tensile elongation and water vapor permeance.
SSPC 2016 Commercial Lineup
On Tuesday, Jan. 19, a series entitled “Commercial Painting Programs—Challenges, Solutions and Opportunities” will be presented.
