Hexion Expands Production Capacity
Hexion Inc., based in Columbus, OH, announced Wednesday (Nov. 18) that it is expanding its waterborne epoxy resin production capacity in Tianjin, China.
Considered a global leader in thermoset resins, the company said the move takes advantage of the most modern technologies, including a new reactor, which will allow it to meet increasing demand for its waterborne epoxy products.
These products are used to formulate waterborne coatings, polymer flooring, and sizing for glass or carbon fibers used in wind energy, automotive and aerospace applications, the company says.
"Waterborne technology offers manufacturers a more sustainable alternative to solvent-based coatings by reducing volatile organic compounds," Terry Shao, Hexion's regional market development manager for China, said in the company’s statement.
As one of the first global suppliers to bring high-end epoxy waterborne technology to the region, Shao added, the project exemplifies the specialty chemical firm’s commitment “to help customers meet the most rigorous environmental standards and adopt sustainable paints and protective coatings."
With the expansion, Hexion will be able to locally produce and shorten supply times for a broad range of epoxy resins, curing agent and modifiers including its latest development, a waterborne, 2K zinc-rich resin system that is comparable in performance to traditional solvent-borne technologies.
The investment in new capacity, combined with Hexion's dedicated research and development capabilities in Shanghai, offers regional customers an end-to-end solution for their product development needs.
