SSPC Course Available Down Under

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2015

The Society for Protective Coating’s popular Concrete Coating Inspector (CCI) course will now be available in Australia and New Zealand, the association announced Thursday (Nov. 12).

After a successful trial of the CCI class by the Australasian Corrosion Association (ACA), the two companies have signed a licensing agreement enabling the ACA to deliver the SSPC training program.

The course, which was offered to 20 students in Melbourne in March, was presented by highly regarded SSPC instructors Bob Murphy, PCS and Glynn Loftin, PCS.

"The students were engaged and very appreciative that this was the first class of its kind that dealt with concrete,” Murphy said in the SSPC statement.

Completing the Program

The CCI is an intensive six-day program designed to thoroughly train coating inspectors in the proper methods of inspecting surface preparation and installation of protective coatings on concrete structures and facilities.

Presented in three parts, the first two days of the program are designed to provide an overview of concrete components, coating and surfacing types, and surface preparation and substrate repair techniques.

Students who pass the Day 2 exam may advance to the next part of the course.

Days 3-5 of the program are devoted to classroom lecture about planning and providing third-party quality assurance through inspection from pre-surface preparation to post-coating application.

Lectures are supplemented by quizzes and group exercises.

Students who pass the Day 5 exam (and who have the requisite experience) can sit for the certification exam on Day 6.

Planning for 2016 Training

The SSPC Concrete Coating Inspector course will be added to the ACA 2016 course calendar.

According to its website, ACA’s CCI training dates and locations include:

  • Brisbane: March 14-19
  • Perth: May 2-7
  • Sydney: September 12-17

One student who participated in the Melbourne class, Murphy said, noted: “The awareness was as much a matter of putting all things in their place. [The] structured approach collected all I knew, took in a lot I did not know…and put it all together. Fantastic!"
